Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Liyel Imoke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Cross River State governorship election held on Saturday.
Returning Officer Prof. James Ekpoke, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, who announced the result yesterday, said Imoke polled 451,544 votes to beat his closest rival, Pastor Usani-Usani of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) with 31,02.
"We have examined that the PDP candidate not only scored the highest number of votes in the election, but secured 25% votes in 17 local government areas of the state.
Meanwhile, some opposition parties in the state have rejected the result of the election. The governorship candidates of the Hope Democratic Party, Dr. Theo Onyuku and the Congress for Progressive Change, Mrs. Mary Ekpere, alleged irregularities in the conduct of the election.
Usani Usani of the Action Congress of Nigeria described the election "as a mere allocation of votes by the ruling party and the Independent National Electoral Commission using state apparatus to intimidate voters."
The state chairman of the PDP, Ntufam Ekpo Okon, said his party worked hard and deserved to win the election.
