Nigeria leads Africa's internet usage chart

NIGERIA'AS Internet users stood at 45 million in 2011, making it the fastest growing Internet enabled country in Africa.
According to the survey released at the weekend by Internet World Stats, a leading global Internet Market Research outfit, the African continent has witnessed incredible growth in broadband deployment in the last few years, especially since the advent of the various undersea fibre optic cables.
Presently, Africa can boast of having 11 submarine fibre cables, including MainOne cable; Glo 1; SAT 3; WACS; ACE; SEAS; LION 1 and 2; EASSY, among others, with investments of about $6 billion.
The Internet World Stats survey revealed that at the end of 2011, Africa had 139 million Internet users, compared with 4.5 million as at year 2000, a growth rate of about 2000 per cent.
Besides, Internet World Stats said, out of these 139 million, 37.7 million have Facebook accounts.
