and Nnodo Development Centres in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi
State, sharing boundaries with Cross River State, were yesterday,
sacked by severe flood, as three persons were reportedly killed in the
disaster.
Executive Secretary, Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA,
Elder Igboke Umunna, who confirmed the deaths at a joint assessment
tour of the affected areas with the National Emergency Management
Agency, NEMA, said that the remains of one of the victims had been
recovered while two were yet to be found.
Vanguard gathered that property worth millions of naira were also
destroyed as thousands of people displaced by the unfortunate incident
had been forced to take shelter in other communities.
It was gathered that 40 houses, including food crops such as rice,
yams, cassava and other valuables in Igbeagu, Ebyia, Izzi Ominyi and
Nnodo Development Centres in the council were affected by the flood.
Some of the victims, Mr Linus Ezeoru from Ndieze Community, and the
Coordinator of Izzi Development Centre, Apostle Charles Nwokpo
narrated their experiences and appealed to government for assistance.
They said: Everything cultivated this year had been destroyed. We are
at the mercy of government. It is so pathetic. The flood has destroyed
property worth millions of naira. It affected some houses. We are
appealing to the State and Federal Governments to come to our aid. In
the history of our people, we have not had this type of flooding
before. If there is anything like over flooding of the Enyim River, it
only last for one or two days but this time, it went beyond what it
used to be."
The council Chairman, Mr Dustan Nwogbaga, said the flood took the
rural dwellers unawares, adding that the affected communities would
hardly recover from the disaster since their crops were all destroyed
by the flood.
