THE National Executive Committee (NEC) of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Tuesday on whether or not to call of its strike.
But the University of Ibadan (UI) ASUU chapter has rejected government's offer to the union.
At a congress held in the university, the union resolved to go ahead with the strike, saying the government's offer lacked substance.
The UI chapter Chairman, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye said the meeting was held to take a position ahead of today's NEC parley.
Before arriving at a decision, the ASUU NEC will consider the aggregate resolutions of its chapters.
In a letter addressed to ASUU by Professor Nicholas Damachi, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, the federal government assured the union of the reinstatement of Governing Councils of the various universities on or before February 12, 2012.
It also offered to encourage companies operating in the country to collaborate with Nigerian universities in setting up research and development units.
But the UI teachers insisted that the federal government must pay arrears of the funding between 2009 and 2011 amounting to N1.03trillion as contained in the agreement out of which it only paid N490.3billion.
It resolved that the offer of government amounted to discarding the substantive agreement while bringing on board new negotiations which it said was unacceptable.
"Having considered the position of federal government on the ongoing strike action and having discussed and deliberated on it; the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff union of universities resolved that the federal government has failed to show commitment towards implementing the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement which is due for review in July, 2012. We therefore resolved that the strike should continue."
