14th Nigeria Oil and Gas Games begins in Lagos

The 14th Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games begin this weekend in Lagos with preliminaries of the football event kicking off on Saturday at the Legacy pitch, national stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Eleven companies will be participating in the multi-discipline event which has Shell as the defending champions.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos Thursday, chairman of the national organising committee, Peter Odjoji said at the end of the preliminaries of the football event, two finalists will emerge to contest the gold medal in the finals billed for March 3 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Other events to feature in the finals proper include squash, table tennis, tennis, basketball, scrabble, chess, among others. He expressed joy over the steady growth the games had witnessed over the years, noting, "the games which started with only one event, squash and a few participating companies hs grown tremendously to twelve events."

He explained that the essence of the games was not just about winning "but to create an atmosphere of unity and friendship among workers in the industry."

He showered encomiums on the governor and people of Lagos state for what he termed, "their invaluable support to the cause of the games, observing that Lagos provides the participating teams the desired ambiance, peace and safety.

The grand finale of the games begin Sunday, February 26 and end on March 3. The Games will be declared open by the chief host and managing director of Chevron Nigeria, Andrew Fawthrop.
