FG to establish electronic surveillance at border posts

ABUJA—In a fresh move to check influx of illegal immigrants, the Federal Government plans to establish electronic surveillance posts at different locations to  monitore the nation's borders.

The Minister of Interior, Comrade, Abba Moro, told newsmen, at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting that toll plazas would also be built at strategic border posts to strengthen existing immigration checks.

He said the current security challenges facing the nation made it critical to stop criminally minded individuals from coming into the country, especially at a time when many of those arrested for alleged involvement in violent crimes have been identified as illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries.

"When these foreigners are alleged to be part of the problem of insecurity by participating in some of the suicide bombings and  conflicts that we have on our hands, certainly it is a serious concern for the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he said.

Comrade Moro disclosed that the Federal Government had identified 1,497 routes through which people travel to Nigeria.

His words, "it is our hope that this will address this border porosity in the country as presently it is the problem. Besides that the federal government is contemplating building border plazas now so that if we are able to identify and properly protect and secure our regular posts and routes, attention can now be directed further to the irregular border posts these criminals and infiltrators regularly used.

"In addition to that, we are trying to introduce the electronic components to the surveillance of our borders with a central post in Abuja or any part of the country that we deem fit or appropriate to so install. I hope that with the combination of the system of surveillance with the human component of surveillance we should be able to drastically reduce if not completely eliminate border infiltration."

The minister said all necessary measure would be put in place to keep criminals out of the country.
