Hungary's president resigns from his office

"In this situation, when my personal issue divides my beloved nation instead of uniting it, I feel it to be my personal duty to finish my service and resign from my presidential mandate. I ask God's blessing for Hungary and for your work."

With this words to the parliament on Monday, the President of Hungary, Pal Schmitt, resigned after a scandal involving his doctorate degree.
Schmitt had his doctorate revoked last week for plagiarism.
He was elected in 2010 for a five-year term.
The office of the president in Hungary is largely ceremonial.
