Boko Haram: Northern economy bleeding, says Minister

ABUJA—Minister and Deputy Chairman of National Planning Commission,
NPC, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, cried out yesterday that the activities of
the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram have created a lot of distortions
in the economic activities in the region.

Dr. Usman stated this in Abuja, while inaugurating the Central Working
Group, CWG, on the review of the First National Implementation Plan,
NIP, 2010-2013, of the Vision 20:2020. The CWG is an independent panel
set up to conduct the review.

The minister said the activities of the Boko Haram in the North have
created a lot of distortions in the growth of the Nigerian economy.

He said that the review was imperative in order to discover progress
already made as well as constraints in the efforts to develop the
Nigerian economy.

According to him, the implementation of the Plan which started in 2010
was on course in all sectors of the economy, adding that the
implementation of the first phase of the Vision document would end in
December 2013.

He said: "What gets measured gets done. We are measuring the
implementation of the First National Plan to know the achievement made
and the mistakes to avoid.

"We have brought in professionals that will come up with the
assessment of the Plan. The committee is to find out whether the Plan
is working or not. The ultimate goal is for Nigeria to make
significant progress.

He also explained that the review was necessary due the dynamic nature
of the world economy, recent developments in the world economy as well
as developments in the domestic economy, particularly, the security
challenges facing the nation.
