United States Occupy LA urges end to police brutality

Anti-corporate demonstrators in the United States have staged a protest rally in Los Angeles in solidarity with hundreds of other Occupy protesters arrested or brutalized in Oakland.

The Occupy LA protesters marched from MacArthur Park to a nearby Los Angeles police station, calling for an end to police brutality against the peaceful protests.

The Occupy LA activists say Oakland police "over-reacted" by firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd, which resulted in the injury of several protesters.

They also described the mass arrests in Oakland as "a hostage and kidnap situation."

The protest comes after riot police detained more than 500 anti-Wall Street protesters amid clouds of tear gas during Saturday and Sunday in Oakland, California. This was one of the largest mass arrests since nationwide protests began last year.

The Occupy protest campaign owes its inspiration to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, which began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17 to protest, among other things, against the excessive influence of big corporations on the US policies and the high-level corruption in the country.
